It’s the Friday before a long weekend and my mind is on being out of office. Speaking of which…every time I go away and have to set my out of office message, I usually send the generic message that most people send which lets people know I’m away, when I’ll be back, yadda yadda yadda.
I recently received an out of office message from a colleague that easily qualifies as one of the best ever!
I read an article this morning which listed the world’s rudest cities. I thought it was a pretty fun read and it got me thinking about which places I’ve been to that I would consider to be rude.
Before I dive in, let me preface by saying that I don’t think of any cities as being rude…but there are specific experiences with rudeness!
It’s been really great writing about my trip to Australia, but I have to be honest…I have a bit of writer’s block as it relates to Sydney and have decided to take a bit of a break before getting back to it. So, what’s with the post title?
Well, there’s always something about a first time that changes things. The first I’m referring to here is my first time in Europe.

What is a trip to Australia without seeing some wildlife?
Probably still a great one, but it would definitely be incomplete!
I was really looking forward to my Saturday in Perth as it was the day I was going to see my first kangaroo. Well, I finally did see that kangaroo, but it was only the beginning.
In an earlier post, I said that quokkas were the cutest creatures I’d ever seen. No disrespect to the quokka, but that was before I saw a koala in person! Here was my itinerary for the day…

I’m usually quite adventurous when it comes to food in other countries, but I just could not get myself to eat kangaroo! They are just too cute and too exotic for me to eat. But, I was in Australia…so, what then?
No worries…the food in Perth was fantastic! There are very many options and I wasn’t disappointed once. Also, the seafood is great as you’d expect for a city so close to the ocean.
Perth has a number of different suburbs that are all close and easily accessible with some great places to eat. Here’s a rundown…

It’s rare to have a perfect day, but my day at Rottnest Island was perfect. The island sits in the Indian Ocean about 20 km west of Fremantle and is a favourite getaway for local residents.
To get to the island, I caught a ferry at the pier on Barrack Street in Perth which took us on a cruise of the Swan River. The cruise was very scenic and the homes along the river were very nice (one of which was the most expensive home in Australia and was sold for $44 million!). We stopped at Fremantle to pick up passengers and then it was off to the island.
